Nikšić is the second largest city in Montenegro in terms of population (72,443) and the largest municipality with an area of 2.065 km2, comprising 15% of the total country’s area. Located in north-central Montenegro, the city lies at 630 m above sea level. Good transportation links with neighboring countries and proximity to the most important tourist destinations in Montenegro (an hour's drive to the Adriatic Coast or the ski resort of Žabljak) play a vital role in its development.
The town has long tradition and culture. Throughout history, the city of Nikšić repeatedly destroyed, rebuilt, reconstructed, changing its name and appearance. The town’s center is dominated by town square, one of the most beautiful in Montenegro, built in 1885 at the request of King Nikola, with wide streets and boulevards, arranged allies and green areas.
The City of Nikšić is famous for its “sea” - the way the locals usually refer to artificial Lake Krupac. Through the years Krupac was one of the favourite places in the city, and that just improved when the city got its own festival guess where – at the Krupac Lake.
With Lake fest establishment, the second Nikšić festival called Bedem Fest got more popularity too. Located on the Ottoman's fortress called Bedem, Nikšić was back on track with tourists that started to love these two festivals. Tourists started coming, rock and roll and alternative music was in the centre of the attention, so that is the explanation of that Rock and Roll thing in Niksic's nickname 'the city of beer, steel and RnR.'
Nikšić was always the industrial centre of ex Yugoslavia. One of the main industries is the making of one of Montenegro's best-known products – Nikšićko Pivo ('pivo' means beer in Montenegrin language). Nikšić was the home of one of the largest steel producers in Ex-Yugoslavia.
Nikšić is both sunny and snowy. In the summer you can swim in one of the six beautiful lakes; hike on marked trails; ride a bike down a circular path around the city and visit the most beautiful places in Nikšić. In winter you can enjoy winter wonderland in Vučje - skiing, snowboarding, and sledging. Wherever you are “Good Spirit of Nikšić” will be with you.
